The Basic Principle Of NOx Sensor (For VW)

The primary function of a NOx sensor is to measure the concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the vehicle's exhaust gases. Here's how a NOx sensor works:

01/

Detection of NOx Emissions: When the engine of a vehicle burns fuel, it produces nitrogen oxides as a byproduct, which includes both nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitric oxide (NO). NOx emissions are a major contributor to air pollution and can have adverse environmental and health effects.

02/

Sensor Location: NOx sensors are typically installed in the exhaust system, either upstream or downstream of the catalytic converter or SCR system.

03/

Sensing Technology: NOx sensors use various sensing technologies to detect the concentration of NOx in the exhaust gases.

04/

Signal Output: The NOx sensor generates an electrical signal that varies depending on the concentration of NOx in the exhaust gases. The sensor's output is typically in the form of a voltage signal, which is sent to the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU) or emissions control system.

05/

Feedback to the ECU: The ECU uses the data from the NOx sensor to optimize the engine's air-fuel mixture and control the operation of emissions control systems, such as SCR or LNT. By monitoring NOx levels, the ECU can make real-time adjustments to reduce NOx emissions and meet emissions standards.

06/

Closed-Loop Control: NOx sensors are often part of a closed-loop control system, which means the ECU continuously adjusts engine parameters based on the sensor's feedback to maintain optimal emissions performance. This can include controlling exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates, injection of adblue (diesel exhaust fluid), or adjustments to ignition timing and fuel injection.

Operating Conditions of NOx Sensor (For VW)

When the ignition switch is turned on, the NOx sensor will be heated to 100 ℃. Then wait for the ECM to send a "dew point" temperature signal (dew point temperature means that there will be no moisture in the exhaust system that can damage the NOx sensor after this temperature).

At present, the dew point temperature is set to 120 ℃, and the temperature value is the value measured by referring to the outlet temperature sensor of EGP; When the sensor receives the dew point temperature signal from ECM, the sensor will heat itself to a certain temperature (up to 800 ℃).

Note: At this time, if the sensor head contacts water, the sensor will be damaged; After heating to the working temperature, the sensor starts normal measurement; The sensor sends the NOx value to the CAN bus, and the engine ECM monitors the NOx emission through this information.

FAQ

Q: How do you know if your NOx sensors are faulty?

A: The NOx sensors tells the ECU how much DEF should be injected into the exhaust before it enters the SCR. If the sensors are faulty, you'll likely see increased DEF consumption and fuel spending, alongside erratic or unstable idling. At this point, your truck is likely to throw a fault code, and trigger a warning light on your dashboard.

Q: Can you drive with a bad NOx sensor?

A: It's important to repair or replace a faulty NOx sensor quickly to protect your engine and aftertreatment system. You can drive for a short time with a faulty one, with the engine running rich and over-using DEF, but the ECU will eventually send your truck into limp mode and engine derate.

Q: Why is the NOx sensor important?

A: NOx gases are harmful enough to cause respiratory problems and various health problems. NOx sensors directly contribute to improving air quality by reducing the release of these gases. They are an important tool in combating air pollution, especially in large cities and industrial areas.
